La segunda piel

A STORY BY VITA D'IMMAGINE

In April 2018 we traveled to the Canary Islands for a workshop on storytelling and reportage with Gitene Vespirini, a very talented photographer and storyteller. We were able to learn a lot from this experience.

This project, La Segunda Piel, is the result.

In the northeastern part of the island of Lanzarote, within the Chinijo Archipelago National Park, lies La Caleta de Famara: a small village of just over 1000 inhabitants.

The Riscos de Famara close the beach on the west side, while to the east is located the village to mark the end of this tongue of golden sand that becomes darker as it approaches the ocean.

This dark color is due to the eruption of the Timanfaya volcano in 1730: after this eruption, the face of the whole island of Lanzarote has changed.

The weather conditions make Famara beach ideal for sports such as surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing; that is why many surfers come to this village every year. The various surf schools in Famara also allow inexperienced surfers to practice these sports.

Experienced surfers prefer to surf alone and take their time before starting the session. It is not uncommon to see them trying to find the right concentration, with specific exercises or simply staying still watching the sea and the waves. When they feel confident, they just go.

We hope you enjoy this story, so let us know what you think and feel free to send us an email.
